Port authority funds lighting improvements at teen centre
The Sandwich Teen Action Group (STAG) has received an $11,000 donation to help convert the centre’s fluorescent lighting to LED and help ease expenses at the centre.
The recent donation from the Windsor Port Authority allowed the teen centre to convert all 391 fluorescent tubes and fixtures to LED, reducing hydro costs on a permanent basis.
“Port Windsor has been a wonderful partner and supporter of STAG for years,” said John Elliot, STAG’s executive director. “Their donation and expert assistance with this project has made STAG stronger, and thus, our community stronger.”

The STAG facility on the city’s west end, a former school building, had standard fluorescent tubes throughout. Each has now been replaced by newer LED panels. Typically, an LED panel will output 90 lumens/watt vs. 50/watt for fluorescent.
Power consumption is also greatly reduced, saving on average $26/tube/year replaced. Replacing all 391 fluorescent tubes with LED panels would potentially save STAG $10,166 per year or $100,000 over the 10-year life expectancy of the panels.
“This donation is meant to assist with the sustainability of STAG in the Sandwich community,” said Steve Salmons, CEO for the Windsor Port Authority. “Money that was needed for hydro bills will now be available for programming. Additionally, STAG will be doing its part to reduce GHG through lower power consumption.”
STAG offers a variety of after school programming for community youth between the ages of 13 and 19 years.
